Quite famous in and around Malaysia-Marina binti Mahathir is the eldest daughter of Malaysia’s fourth (4th) Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad a widely respected gentleman and politician who revolutionized Malaysia into a great modern country.
A blogger of formidable repute, producer,Marina is also journalist (Columnist) with the Star Newspaper and an activist. A free thinker by virtue of the wide range topics that range from politics, sex, religion, sex and drugs in general earned her a mammoth following from the global spectrum.
In a profiling about her by the New York Times on the 4th of May 2005- Marina is described as “a bubbly, vivacious, liberal minded, non headscarf wearing Muslim active on social issues” and above all one of the high profile Malaysians who have tirelessly fought and helped society against the AIDS scourge.
She is also termed as one of those high profile Malaysians who believe that Malaysia should turn into a multiracial, multi faith and a tolerant modern state.
Marina binti Mahathir has been writing for newspapers as early as 1990 as a columnist and she is still counting.
Although she comes across as independent minded-many critics averse with Malaysian circles put her off as a glamour attention seeking personality who thrives on her father’s name and influence.
Most political critics refer to her father’s bad human rights record which thrives in the negatives because of the number of people who were imprisoned during his reign-an aspect she does not counter passionately. Skeptics say she is always on the defensive in regards to her father.
In her articles or rather “musings in her terms” that can be accessed on her blog musingwithmarina.blogspot.com she comes across as an open minded-intellectual.
Quite a vocal and passionate critic of the current political climate in Malaysia-one wonders if she would enjoy the same amount of freedom of expression had she been an ordinary folk in the days of her father’s reign!!!!
Unlike other vocal critics like the Niamah.com bloggers have had fall ins with the government of today and one too many have equally been jailed at times due to such hard hitting critical content. Most governments hate anything related to critical reporting especially in regards to corruption and transparency related issues.
For having such a reputable, honest, hardened pro people voice, we owe her overwhelming recognition.
We recommend you visit her blog and have a look at her awesome articles.Any feedback and thoughts about Marina Binti Mahathir is welcome in the comment section.
